As a resident of San Francisco I would like to invite you to visit the city and experience advection fog in action.

What is it about the geography of San Francisco that creates this amazing fog?

San Francisco is uniquely situated between the ocean and the warm inland climate of California. The temperatures on the bay - closer to the ocean - tend to average about 20 degrees cooler than the inland temperatures during summer months (June - August). When the warm air from the land moves across the cold land near the ocean the warm continental air mass meets the cooler oceanic air mass creating what we call the marine layer. The ocean is cool enough to lower the warm temperature to the dew point creating the fog.

This phenomenon is not necessarily unique to San Francisco, but it is certainly most dramatic here. Come see the fog swallow up some of the most world-renown and famous landmarks in the world. From the rocky coastline, to the Golden Gate Bridge, to the downtown Skyline.
